UNLEASHING MY LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL??? ARE YOU SERIOUS???
By: Joe Brodnicki ©2011
If you learn something and you’re unable to repeat it under real life stress conditions you don’t know it at all. ~ Colin Cox
Year after year, we continue to be bombarded with new, latest, greatest books about leadership that proclaim the shortage of leadership and provide all sorts of useful concepts and pithy quotes that inspire would-be leaders. They also go off to great conferences and training and, while they are inspired to share these useful concepts and pithy quotes with everyone else, nothing really changes. Certainly not the way they lead.
It’s as if knowing about concepts such as “leading by example” (and these would-be leaders do—the problem is the example they lead by), Emotional Intelligence, communicating with excellence, driving out fear, having inspiring vision, treating people with respect and countless more great concepts is the very same as embodying them. If they gave a written test, they’d be paragons of leadership. But, when it comes to the ‘front lines’ of everyday living and working, we’re left to wonder, “Where’s the beef?”
You may know someone like this. You may even see that person in the mirror.
We all know the real test of leadership is in making the concepts real in your life first, then in the lives of others. If anyone asked most would-be leaders if they actually practice and embody these great concepts, they would find they fall far short of the image they have of themselves. Who do they think they are kidding?
The issue of self-deception is not new. Many books, beginning with the Bible (or maybe even before) speak to our infinite capacity for self-deception. The back cover of the book, Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box, makes an astounding assertion: “Most personal and organizational problems are the result of a little-known problem called “self-deception.”
So, let’s come back to our topic: are you serious about unleashing your leadership potential? Here are a few questions to help you decide:
– Is it important to you? Are you personally and passionately called to lead from your station in life? Or, is it just a nice idea or a career enhancer?
– Does the change to leading require a transformation in both who you are and how you are?
– Does it have to happen right now? Can you afford to wait?
If you’re ready to begin the journey of unleashing the power you have within you to lead, here are three tips:
1. Claim your full personal power. This means two things:
• Clearly define what it is that you want, stay focused on both the goal and what can help you move toward that goal right now. “Personal power is the ability to get what you want, given what is available from your environment right now (1).” If you want to buy a new car, what can help you get to the goal? What can you do right now to help you make a decision? Who can help? How can you make or save money right now to help you get to the goal?
To turn wishes and ideas into reality, you need both intermediate goals and specific actions, especially those that can be realized in the present, to help you get there.
• Become aware of and claim your personal powers. All of us have the same four powers: thinking, feeling, speaking, and doing. Become aware of your powers, claim them (don’t be shy, be honest!), and put them to use to become the leader you want to be! Start right where you are, right now.
2. Develop a system to put great ideas and concepts into reality. Turn these into “muscle memory” to handle the opportunities and challenges you face in everyday living. Make them real!
1. Identify the idea, concept, or idea you want to make real, the one you want to put in your muscle memory so it becomes as automatic as brushing your teeth
2. Describe the principle as a belief in a way that you really believe it.
3. Decide to do it and state the belief as a decision.
4. Try on the decision as a feeling or an experience.
5. Action: Step forward and state it as an action. What one thing will you do tomorrow that will
begin to manifest this in your life? And the day after that?
6. Imagine carrying out that one thing you will do today and let the change, the accomplishments, and the possibilities spiral and reinforce the decision you have made.
The idea of unleashing one’s own leadership potential isn’t for everyone. When you are ready to accept the challenge of living fully and realizing your dreams, best, and highest, remember you are not walking this path alone and to seek guides and like-minded people. Together, we will make a difference!

Does Change Have to Be So Hard?
By: Joe Brodnicki ©2011
Have you ever asked yourself, “Why does change have to be so hard?” At work, managers and executives have big ideas that turn into just another fad of the month. At home, you try to lose weight or get in shape, and time and time again, you come up short and end up starting all over. And who wants to think about changing things in your community or at your church!
Yet, you know that the need to create powerful changes in business, society and even your life is greater now than it has ever been. Maybe you’re ready to think that change doesn’t have to be so hard when you have the personal skills and states-of-mind to lead and participate in the changes you want to see happen. If you are ready to make a difference, read on.
BREAKING DOWN THE IDEA OF CHANGE
We can probably agree that “change” is a broad term with many potential definitions. Let’s break the concept of “change” into three major categories: remedial, learning, and generative. The first kind of change is known as remedial change. This kind of change is aimed at ‘fixing’ something that’s broken or needs healing. The need for remedial change is typically obvious, yet difficult to deal with. Traditional psychology is designed to facilitate remedial change. Dealing with addiction and psychological trauma are examples of the need for remedial changes.
The second kind of change is known as learning change. Learning change is about cognitive growth and expanding your view of reality (development). Learning change seeks to embrace and live life fully, taking it as it comes with an attitude of learning, curiosity, adaptability, and passion.
Generative change takes you through the different challenges of each part of your life creating new thoughts, emotions and behaviors, is the third kind of change. Generative change covers every aspect and every stage of your life. It gives you the power to adapt to and thrive through the challenges of every age and life situation.
The way you frame change dictates the way you go about making it happen. If you are seeking powerful, productive, and sustainable change, you need to create an environment of generative change.
PREPARING FOR CHANGE
The time to prepare for change is before it happens (and it’s happening all the time). You need to be able to respond to the demands of generative change requirements of business projects like start-ups, reengineering, re-organizing, mergers, and the like.
How often have you heard, “If we could only change this or that, things would start to pick up around here?” Yet, when someone actually starts to tackle the issue, even the people who want change resist and fight it tooth and nail? How much more difficult is change when people don’t like it, don’t understand it, or simply don’t like the person who initiated the change?
It may seem crazy, but you’ve seen it happen (or maybe even participated!) in creating less-than-optimal results from a change effort you’ve been a part of. One of the places to start being a change master is to change the belief that change needs to be hard or painful. Change beliefs about people such as, “People never change” and realize that “the change must start with me!”
Why does every change expert say you need to banish fear? Change seems and feels very dangerous. Change tests your ego-strength, your courage, and your ability to see and take reality head-on. To banish fear, you have to overcome the ego-defenses that stymie change such as denial, excuse-making, and rationalization. Then, you need to create the ego-strength to overcome the fear, accept and give feedback, take on reality as it really is, and to create and realize powerful visions.
How do you take on this radical and profound change in people? First, approach change with a new outlook. Change is a learning and developmental process that is natural (change happens all the time), desirable, and motivating. This takes both cleaning up past baggage and instilling new ways of thinking and doing. The challenge calls for a whole new set of skills to enable us to intentionally adapt to and embrace change.
One way to make this change happen is to commit to self-actualization: your self, your leaders, and your organization. Self-actualizing means identifying and committing to do and be your best. This transformative process unleashes creativity, leadership, and the capacity to produce excellent results through people and processes. It closes the broad gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it.
What it takes:
First. Commit to self-actualizing yourself and your organization to realize your potential as human beings. Start by training yourself and your leaders. Provide self-actualization (Meta) coaching to prepare for and navigate major change and unleash the potential of your organization. Join in the New Human Potential movement to reach our utmost and best.

Meta-States, Metaphor, and the Layers of the Onion
By: Rich Liotta ©2011
Neuro-Semantics is a relatively new psychological system1 for helping people reach their potential; their highest and best selves. We have a way of understanding our mind-body-emotion system that is holistic, practical, and effective. While neuro-semantics builds on established psychological models, we map the territory of personal growth, healing, and actualizing excellence in a manner different than most are accustomed to. Because of this neuro-semantics has some new concepts and language that may not be immediately meaningful to everyone.
The field of neuro-semantics has the challenge that often happens when new ideas and new technologies are developed; often the traditional way we use words to describe things just does not communicate the heart and nuance of the advancement readily. Metaphors are often needed to help. This is especially true when trying to explain models, theories, and concepts that are outside how someone currently maps their world. We learn new ideas though what we can imagine and what we experience. Metaphor helps us imagine concepts for which we do not yet have an experiential reference.
The subject of this article is one of the central concepts in neuro-semantics, “Meta-states.” Meta-states are easy to understand once you have experienced them. But the challenge is helping people understand their value and power (in facilitating growth, self-improvement, personal effectiveness, and self-actualization) before they have had the opportunity to experience them personally!
Meta-states are our levels of meaning: our thoughts about our thoughts, our feelings about our feelings, our conclusions about what our thoughts and feeling mean, etc. Meta-states are the frames we already have and the frames we can create. The meanings we create about ourselves and our possibilities and potentials effect how we think, feel, and behave; and indeed impact everything in your life! Our frames can limit us or they can unleash us towards transformation. We all have frames or levels of meta-states (they include our attitudes, beliefs, values, and expectations). They are not neutral, they either serve you or they do not! Do your frames (meta-states) serve you well?
Meta-states are really the apps of the brain!2 When you activate and utilize your inherent capacities to make and rearrange meanings you can run you’re your brain, direct your mind-body system, and direct your life! Meta-stating processes are used to explore, transform, organize, and create our meta-states.
So the questions are: What metaphors can help you imagine meta-states? What metaphors can help you imagine the transformation that can occur when you intentionally use your ability to rearrange and amplify your meanings?
In Dr. Hall’s writings he uses a variety of metaphors to help clarify various aspects of neuro-semantics and meta-states. What follows is offered in that spirit.
The next section of this article was originally a standalone article.3 What I had in mind when I wrote it was applying the mind-as-onion metaphor to describe meta-states, meta-stating processes, how the mind is structured and organized, and how we can transform ourselves. I invite you to read it with a frame of playful curiosity!
Secrets of personal transformation: What’s missing from the mind-as-onion metaphor?
The onion metaphor has often been used to describe the process of delving into a person’s psyche. Layers are removed to reveal what is beneath, toward the core. The metaphor reflects the many layers that we have inside us. Most who use this metaphor suggest that peeling away the layers of the onion is the complete story. The assumption seems to be that the awareness that happens as the layers of the onion are peeled away changes people. Is it the tears? Is it some magical healing factor that happens by exposing what was hidden to the light of day? Is it revealing the possibilities waiting for expression in the undamaged inner core? Certainly knowing what is within is useful, but usually insight alone is not enough to make real change and to sustain it.
Something critical is missing from the mind-as-onion metaphor. What supposedly happens when these layers are removed? Some unknown aspect of ourselves is revealed; okay then what?
It seems to me that the onion needs to be reconstructed and put back together, layer by layer, to be whole again. Putting the pieces together again, that is what’s missing!
If we want to make it into something else entirely, such as salad, slices and layers scattered randomly around may be fine. But to be whole, the layers need to be re-placed or re-formed to complete what has essentially become a three dimensional puzzle. Have you ever tried to put a real onion back together? Not likely, but if so, how did that go for you? There is something about taking it apart that changes it. Perhaps that is the sometimes curative element of peeling away the layers of the onion; yet pieces themselves are not a whole.
Let us consider what these layers are for the human mind-body system. These layers are meanings. They are meanings we make from our experiences, our thoughts, and our feelings. These layers are the emotions, possibilities, limitations, beliefs, and intentions that we developed and solidified inside ourselves through our experience. These layers are fundamentally meanings, often multifaceted meanings, which direct how we live our life and how we feel about our life. Just examining these does not necessarily enrich them, or us, in ways that are helpful or in ways that serve us. It is what we do with that information next that matters.
In order to reconstruct the onion, to make it whole, changing the meanings of each layer and how they are stacked together is needed. Sometimes through our life experience the onion grew with the layers it needed to survive to deal with a lack of sunshine or too much rain. The way the layers formed may have served us then, but not now. Now the layers seem misplaced, out of place, malformed or just unhelpful! To make matters worse, sometimes the wrong layer is on top of another layer. The order of these layers matters, as it affects how we feel, how we function, what we think, and what we believe.
In an onion the layers have a static relationship to each other, a specific layer belongs on top of or beneath another and that’s just the way it is. Fortunately our layers have more options! Our structure is not static. It is a malleable, and perhaps even magical, multidimensional puzzle of onion pieces that can be put together in a variety of ways. People have a natural tendency to feel that things are the way they are, often not realizing the strength and power they have to reconstruct the onion and become someone better and different, an enriched version of their former self. We are capable of true transformation!
Changing the meaning is changing the layers; first by examining them, noticing them, acknowledging them, and then by questioning whether those meanings serve us. Changing the meaning is reconstructing each layer. Reconstructing is also deciding which layers go where. It is choosing which layers to honor and which ones are best discarded. Redesigning and improving ourselves is changing the nature of the layers and transforming them into something different, transforming the meanings. Then we can put the layers back together and reconstruct, revise and remap the layers.
Through reflection you can see the layers of your deeper self and appreciate the possibilities of your higher self. Know that you are capable of choosing how to layer and organize all the pieces to create a whole that manifests your highest goals and best dreams!
Who knows what will be the result. Perhaps what you will have at the end is not an onion at all, but something else, something more wonderful, a self transformed!
Concluding Comments:
If I have accomplished my purpose here, you can answer “yes” to these two questions:
— Can I more clearly imagine meta-states, our layers of meaning, and how they can keep someone stuck or set them free?
— Can I imagine the transformation that can occur when someone intentionally uses their inherent capability to reorganize and empower their meanings to serve their goals and aspirations?
If you answered “yes” you have taken the first step to appreciating how Neuro-Semantics helps people live more effectively, reach their potential, and actualize their highest and best goals.
The next step is experiencing meta-stating processes yourself. As a mind-body strategy, full understanding comes with the personal experience. These experiences include (to name just two) the experience of amplifying and applying meanings and the experience of bringing your meanings into your body. Only by doing this can the full benefit of this approach be yours!

The First International Neuro-Semantics Conference: Actualizing Excellence
The First International Neuro-Semantic Conference was truly a special event! Actualizing Excellence was the theme. The conference brought together people from around the world who have the vision of making the world a better place by offering skills that help people become their best.
The conference was held in Grand Junction, Colorado (the home of L. Michael Hall, the originator of Neuro-Semantics) July 1 through July 3, 2011.
Representatives from 14 countries attended: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, and the United States. Seventeen presenters delivered 20 workshops on the themes of Business, Coaching, and Personal Development along with 3 keynote presentations.
Dr. Hall (in Meta-Reflections #30, July 4, 2011) commented that “…the passion and energy at the Conference was incredible! It was exciting. It often felt like a burning fire of passion and care for what we have and what it can do in the world…” He also commented that numerous times various individuals approached him and commented about a particular workshop, “What I got out of that one workshop was worth more than the price for the whole Conference!”
The conference was lively, inspirational, and practical. The collective wisdom, optimism, and hope expressed by the presenters and participants was amazing. This gathering of diverse people, a global community, with the common mission of promoting excellence and self-actualization to change the world for the better – one person at a time – was something to behold!
A few of the highlights of the conference included:
Dr. L. Michael Hall’s keynote, Actualizing Excellence with Neuro-Semantics, described how from the beginning, Neuro-Semantics has focused on actualizing a person’s highest values, meanings, and visions for his or her best performances. Dr. Hall went on to outline how Neuro-Semantics is pioneering the New Human Potential Movement, building on the foundational work of Abraham Maslow, by developing unique approaches to facilitating Self-Actualization.
On Saturday evening, Mandy Chai from Hong Kong delivered a keynote that stirred the hearts of everyone there with the vision that she caught in 2005 and that she has now made “actual” in her Neuro-Semantic work in Hong Kong and China as she had led the way to taking Neuro-Semantics to Asia.
A real treat at the Conference was the appearance of Dr. Bob Bodenhamer, who was Dr. Hall’s business partner for many years and co-founded the International Society of Neuro-Semantics with Dr. Hall. Bob came and presented a workshop on his work in working with people who stutter. And as usual, he stole the hearts of those who heard him!
The Inaugural International Neuro-Semantic Conference was brought to a conclusion Sunday night with a powerful keynote speech from Master Trainer Colin Cox who used the story of the adventure of reaching the summit of Mount Everest as a metaphor for catching a vision, making a decision, living a commitment, and persevering. Colin’s call to action for those of us at the Conference was a call to recognize “the next level” and name the mountain that we will climb, to recognize the banner or flag that we will carry, and the commitment that we will live.
Here are some of the comments written down at the end of the Conference to give you a flavor:
“I just spent three days listening to top-notch people from all over the world deliver top-notch, life-changing presentations. It was inspiring to be in the company of so many who are following their dreams and making a difference.” Becky Schumacher, Minnesota USA
